What do you do with the little things that you have decluttered that are not worth selling? You can donate them or give them away. For example, in Berlin by putting them out on the street. But is that actually allowed?
“Free stuff” – a typical sign in Berlin
Have you found things while decluttering that are too good to throw away but not worth the effort of selling? Maybe you’ve played the Minimalism Game?
Especially in a city like Berlin and in apartment buildings, people like to put things for free in the stairwell or in front of the house. There they usually disappear in a few hours seemingly like magic.
What is suitable for giving away for free on the street?
- Books
- Magazines
- Crockery
- Decorative items
- Costume jewellery
- Toys
What is NOT suitable for giving away on the street?
Bulk trash
Large pieces of furniture, carpets and electronics do not belong on the street. Large collections of books, clothing, etc. also do not belong on the street. It is actually illegal to leave such objects outside. This makes sense, because they block the way and are not easy to carry away for those interested. Better to offer in the category “Gifting” on Kleinanzeigen.de. Or take it to the recycling center or order a bulky trash collection. More information for donations in Berlin is available from the BSR.
Broken things
What is broken belongs in the trash or recycling bin, not on the doorstep. The same applies to things that are torn or dirty. Here is a tip: You can bring broken electrical appliances to electronics stores and hardware stores in Germany. Simply hand them over at the service counter.
Dangerous things
Nothing that could endanger for example children or dogs belongs on the street.
Things no one needs
There are old things that nobody really wants anymore. No one needs a manual like “Windows ’95 for Dummies”. This goes in the trash.
What should you consider when giving away things for free on the street in Berlin?
Important: You remain responsible for your belongings until someone else has taken them! So remember:
- Only put them out when the weather is well. Wind and rain are not good for most objects.
- Stick a “For free” note on the object, so everyone knows that they are welcome to take it with them.
- If you put out small items, it’s best to put all items in a box.
- Things must not become a tripping hazard! Don’t block doors or passages, and leave enough space for strollers and wheelchairs. Place items directly against the wall or on a windowsill.
- And if no one has taken your stuff after 24 hours, you need to dispose of them properly. By the way, you are also legally obliged to do so.
If you stick to these rules, giving stuff away in Berlin on your doorstep is a great thing: You get rid of the stuff with little effort and make the people in your neighborhood happy!
