I used to leave my full suitcase standing around in the apartment for days. Ignoring it as much as possible and walking around it before I pulled myself together to finally unpack the suitcase. When avoiding meets procrastination…
After the trip is before unpacking
And today? Everything is quickly put back in its place and the suitcase disappears. Even if you come home exhausted after the trip, it’s worth tackling the unpacking right away. Unless you come home after midnight, of course. But even then, suitcases, trolleys or backpacks can be put away the next day and not the next week!
How to unpack your suitcase in 7 steps
Put on some good music and let’s go:
- Clean laundry goes back into the closet, blouses and shirts possibly go with the to-iron stack.
- Dirty laundry goes into the laundry hamper or directly into the washing machine.
- Shoes belong on the shoe rack.
- Cosmetics are stored in the bathroom.
- Books, games, camera and chargers are put back on the shelf or in boxes.
- For souvenirs, find a nice spot in the apartment or they go into the memory box. Souvenirs for friends and family should be ready in a bag so that they can be handed over immediately on the next visit.
- Finally, the suitcase should be stowed away: If it needs it, wipe it down and shake out the beach sand. Then it goes under the bed, in the closet, in the basement or in the attic, wherever it can find space and “live together” with other suitcases and travel bags.
Packing tips for the next trip
Unpacking your suitcase is the best opportunity to recapitulate how you can pack better in the future: Pay attention to what clothes were not worn at all, which knick-knacks traveled for free and what you would have needed more of. If you travel regularly for business, for example, it is a good idea to leave certain things such as cosmetics in travel sizes, shoe bags, umbrellas, etc. directly in your suitcase. So you are always ready for the next trip.
And if the couch is still tempting, always remember: The faster the unpacking of the suitcase is done, the more relaxed everyday life can start again!
